L.O.V.E. After School Tutoring Begins Oct. 21st
Aldersgate United Methodist Church Life Center
The computer center is ready and thanks to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, the program will begin on October 21, 2008 in the Family Life Center next to the gymnasium where Performance Initiatives and Coastal Empire Weightlifting is housed. L.O.V.E. is a program which was founded in Savannah and works through the Chatham County school system to help students after school in community centers throughout Savannah. L.O.V.E. believes that improving a child's education is the foundation for improving quality of life. Classroom teachers have little opportunity to work one-on-one with students. The L.O.V.E. mentor always has this luxury, which adds another dimension to the process. A volunteer mentor provides motivation and support. Each child is matched with a caring adult mentor who meets with the student at his/her school for 45 minutes each week, on the same day at the same time. If you have three hours, you could mentor three children. In addition, each volunteer receives continuing education through L.O.V.E seminars and training.
Community Centers after school Volunteers provide one-on-one homework assistance to students grades 1-12. Also, when grades fall below 80 in any of the core subjects, a special tutor is assigned. Help is also available to students struggling with Spanish, French or composition. Life skills are emphasized. VOLUNTEER PROFILE Age: 16-85 Gender: Male or Female Education: High School Grad to PhD Vocation: From all walks of life What they all have in common: Caring, committed and patient in nurturing children toward becoming the best they can be. What we need most: Volunteers
