SAVANNAH – Iron Will Jiu Jitsu will celebrate their first year anniversary at the Performance Initiatives gym with a belt test and seminar on March 20th. The testing and seminar are open to the public to educate on the art of Jiu Jitsu martial arts.
Iron Will Jiu Jitsu was just accepted into the USA Jiu Jitsu organization http://www.usajj.com. Will Hiott is the head of the Iron Will Jiu Jitsu school in Savannah, where he currently has 29 students in his program. Most students are on scholarships through Performance Initiatives, the non-profit organization that works with children who may not have the opportunity to participate in a program of this kind.
Hiott’s mission with his students, who all range between 7-18, is to teach kids to not fight and to develop themselves. Jiu Jitsu forces participants to learn self-control and self-discipline. Hiott wants his students to deal with verbal conflict before resorting to physical conflict. “With skills taught at an early age, we hope to keep kids in school and off the streets,” said Hiott.
Hiott includes his two year-old twins and seven year-old in his program. “It’s never too early to start setting a good example,” he said. As the only volunteer with Iron Will Jitsu, Hiott is currently looking for volunteer help to expand the program.
If you go: Iron Will Jiu Jitsu School inside Aldersgate United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 2021 Tennessee Avenue. Date: Saturday, March 20th Time: Belt Testing 9 a.m. Seminar at 11:00 am
